What is beauty therapy?

It is worth thinking for a moment about what we mean by beauty therapy. An assumption might be that it is a modern practice, given that the promotion of it seems to be everywhere. This is far from the case as anyone who has seen pictures of Ancient Egyptians, for instance, will appreciate. In may other cultures around the globe too beauty therapy and its various branches have always been an essential part of customs and rituals, and not just among women.

But it’s not just a question of ritual which beauty therapy, in its various branches, that has made it such an important career. More and more people are starting to realise the crucial part feeling good about yourself is a key to a sense of well-being. Making even basic modifications in appearance can enhance your self-esteem and others’ views of you. How exciting then to be in an industry where you can play a part!

So, what does beauty therapy consist of? As well as the obvious skills of simple make-up and nail care, it can include:

As well as these, a visit to a beautician can be an important thing in itself. The recent restrictions of lockdown have been proof for so many people of the value of being able to relax in the care of someone you trust, and to chat and feel pampered, for mental health reasons as much as anything. Never has a visit to the barber, hairdresser or nail technician been missed so much.

What are the benefits of a beauty therapy qualification?

The benefits are considerable. With a qualification, potential clients will view you differently, and not just as an enthusiastic amateur. So much can go wrong when dealing with someone else’s appearance and the products involved, so you need to give yourself and your clients that reassurance that you know what you are doing!

What pathways are open to me?

Some people choose to undertake a general course such as our Complete Beauty Course before focussing on a specialist area later such as brow lamination. Having a sound foundation in the profession as a whole is a good way to build up your all-round expertise and knowledge, allowing you to see which options will suit you best later.

What job prospects are there?

The demand for trained beauty therapists is increasing, so it is unlikely that with the qualification you will be kicking your heels for long.

As well as the skills and knowledge that employers will look for, you would need to have an outgoing personality which customers can relate to, and an enthusiasm for your career. Furthermore, you could at some point be confident of thinking about setting up your own business with the promise of your own clients, thereby making your career even more exciting and fulfilling.

What sort of person do I need to be to be a beautician?

Well, we wouldn’t want to be prescriptive but you probably know from your own experience of visiting a hairdresser or nail technician that the range of personalities can vary enormously. Some clients, for instance, are put off by someone being too chatty and really would like to be left alone with their thoughts while the treatment etc. is being done. Others can’t get too much of gossip and telling the beautician of ‘their holidays’! What is important is that you have the capacity to recognise what approach the client is happiest with, and to adapt your approach accordingly.

However, the following are essential for a successful career:

  • Positive and outgoing
  • Attentive and caring personality
  • Genuine passion and love for beauty treatments
  • Commitment to quality, health, and safety
  • Proactive about learning new skills, practices and approaches
  • Strong work ethic
  • High level of professionalism
